GIS

Geographic Information Science is an essential skill to have in a world that is heavily turning more digital. The tools and skills learned through GIS are helpful for data analysis, spatial analysis, and mapping, especially in Environmental Science. Here are some digital projects I have completed in GIS courses.

GIS project on Gentrification in Mexico

Course: Introduction to GIS

For my final project in this class, I wanted to take a look outside the US and focus on a growing problem countries like Mexico have been facing in recent years: gentrification. I used data from Mexico’s National Institute of Statistics and Geography to map out differences in population demographics and household expenditure to visualize patterns between them in ArcGIS. This required skills in data compilation and several different ArcGIS skills and practices for a successful mapping project.

GIS project on car accidents in Carbondale, CO

Course: Spatial Analysis

For this intermediate GIS course, I wanted to analyze patterns in car accidents in Carbondale, a small city in Colorado to see if any specific intersections, ages or other factors played a significant role in the frequency of car accidents. I compiled GIS crash data from Colorado’s Department of Transportation and Public School Locations from Colorado’s Geospatial Portal, properly projected the spatial data on a map and used different analysis tools to view any patterns.
